Dassault used a combination of augmented and virtual reality to unveil its new long-haul business jet, Falcon 10X, during a May 6 program launch ceremony broadcast from their hangar at Le Bourget.

The Falcon 10X is Dassault’s direct competitor to Gulfstream and Bombardier’s latest large cabin jets, the G700 and Global 7500. With a range of 7,500 nautical miles, it will become the first Dassault business jet to be powered. by Rolls Royce engines. Dassault executives and pilots gave an overview of new design features for the jet using virtual reality to show what the real 10X will look like when it goes into service, which the French aerospace and defense manufacturer plans to achieve by the end of 2025.

“The 10X will be more than just another big step forward in business aviation. It will be absolutely the best business jet available in the ultra-long-haul category and will remain so for a long time to come, ”said Eric Trappier, President and CEO of Dassault, in a press release announcing the 10X.

Honeywell Aerospace is providing a next-generation version of its Epic cockpit for the 10X. Stevan Slijepcevic, president of the electronics solutions division at Honeywell Aerospace, said International Avionics that the touchscreen user interface for Epic on the 10X has been developed with a new avionics design language system designed to support touch interactions directly on display screens and the new keypad cursor control device tactile.

“The Falcon 10X has eight high definition touch screens with crisp contrast; that provide a clearer display of visual information in high and low light conditions. Flexible window app layout presets based on flight phases or the ability to create custom app layout configurations based on personal preferences, which can be saved as presets, ”Slijepcevic wrote in a statement sent by email. “Intelligent Display Units (SDUs) support faster data entry, instant radio frequency insertion, or radio frequency queuing for future use. They also provide faster access to information and / or systems – each check is done in 2-3 clicks. “

There’s also a new advanced navigation system capable of displaying spherical projections of flight plans on screens, focused on supporting longer distances the Falcon 10X can fly.

“Long distance comes with long flight plans. Today’s maps require a lot of panning and map manipulation due to their limitations on range representation. This takes time and increases the workload of the pilot. With upgrades to INAV (interactive navigation), a pilot can now see the entire international flight plan from origin to destination in one view. Zooming in on areas of interest like a waypoint along the flight plan or even your FBO at the destination airport is now much easier with the front touchscreen integration, ”Slijepcevic said.

On the 10X, the Epic cockpit uses a larger vertical situation display, giving pilots better handling of waypoints associated with some of the newer and more complex departure and arrival procedures. According to Honeywell, the larger window option to display the VSD can now integrate airspace and weather information that was previously limited to side-mapping display applications.

“One of the features that excites me the most is Honeywell’s patented vertical graphical flight planning. Honeywell was the first to introduce graphical flight planning to the side map with the introduction of Epic and now we have extended the same intuitive graphical interaction to the VSD. Pilots will now be able to perform a Vertical Direct To graphically on the VSD waypoint as well as easily insert or modify the constraints of altitude, speed or time of arrival, ”said Slijepcevic.

Another new innovation featured on Epic’s Falcon 10X version is a Single Antenna Radar Altimeter (SARA) that integrates what previously required six separate avionics components into a single unit. The SARA integrates the transmit and receive antennas into one, while also supporting CAT I and II landings. “Radar altimeter installations typically take several hours to assemble the two antennas, two cables, the tray, and the radar altimeter itself. The installation of SARA can be completed in 15 minutes and requires eight simple screws and a connector, ”Slijepcevic said.

The 10X will also feature a next-generation version of the digital flight control system on the Dassault Falcon 6X, 7X and 8X. Among the novelties mentioned by the two Dassault test pilots during the 10X launch ceremony, there is a new recovery mode that is activated at the touch of a button. Using the push-button recovery system will return the aircraft to straight and level flight from any position.

The 10X will also borrow flight control technology already in service on its Rafale fighter jets with a single power lever intelligent throttle capable of controlling all aspects of the thrust management and cable steering of the flight system. navigation. Air brake and thrust reverser controls have also been included in the smart throttle, and separate controls will allow 10X riders to control each of its Rolls Royce Pearl engines individually.

There is also enough room in the cockpit for a fully reclined seat, where – if future regulations allow – one pilot could rest while the other flies.

With a cabin volume of 2,780 cubic feet (79 cubic meters), the 10X offers the largest cabin interior of any purpose-built business jet. It is almost eight inches wider than its competitors, according to Dassault.

“We’ve set the bar incredibly high for our new Falcon,” said Trappier. “But I can say with confidence that we have put this aircraft at the top of the market.”
